Top Surf Spots in KZN  Summer in KwaZulu-Natal is hot and the water appealing, but onshore northeasterly winds tend to make it choppy unless you get there at first light. Waves are generally smaller, less powerful and inconsistent during the warmer months, whereas winter brings groundswell, glassy conditions and longer rides. DID YOU KNOW? The first South African Surfing Championships took place in Durban in 1966. Broadly speaking, the KwaZulu-Natal coastline is divided into three zones: Durban, North Coast and South Coast. Durban, or Surf City, has The Golden Mile of perfect beaches tucked between a series of piers. These are all consistent beach breaks capable of holding sizeable winter swell and summer cyclone swell. The most popular of these are: Bay of Plenty; New Pier; North Beach; Wedge and Dairy . Further south towards the harbour, uShaka and Vetches only pick up when massive southerly winter swells wrap around the harbour and onto the reef. South ...

THE "GREATEST SHOAL ON EARTH" Article - @KZNSharksBoard Each year in June or July along the KwaZulu-Natal coast the word gets out and, within hours, crowds of frenzied human predators converge on the area to join sharks, gamefish, marine mammals and birds in a feeding orgy. It is a time of plenty for all as large shoals of sardines move in a band up the coast. Fresh, frozen, canned, pickled or bait - whatever way you consider them, sardines (also known as pilchards) will have featured somewhere in the lives of many South Africans. Like their close relatives, the anchovies and herrings, sardines  (Sardinops sagax)  live out their lives in huge shoals in the surface layers of the ocean. Although these fish are small, collectively they comprise nearly a quarter of the world's fish catch by weight, making them one of our most valuable groups of fish. Sardines are cold-water fish and are usually associated with areas of cold ocean upwelling, where deeper, cooler, ...

Enjoy a day thats  for the "BIRDS"  The Umgeni River Bird Park was designed and built by Dr Alan Abrey. It is situated in an old quarry site which used to contain water and was visited by Alan as a young boy growing up in Durban. When looking for a bird park site, he remembered it as a perfect option. After a year of extensive land filling, landscaping and aviary construction, the Umgeni River Bird Park was opened in April 1984 by the then mayor of Durban, Councillor Sybil Hotz. The park is situated in 3.5 hectares of lush tropical landscaping and houses an ever-increasing collection of more than 800 birds from 200 species. Some species are the only representatives of their kind in Africa whilst others are commonly kept as pets. One of the main focuses of the park is education. Whilst this means different things to everybody, the programs we have in place and have planned for introduction by the end of the year will ensure something for everyone. Our education man...
Johnny’s Roti Also known as Sunrise Chip ‘N Ranch, Johnny’s Rotis is an institution. You haven’t been to Durban if you haven’t eaten the triple cheese and chip roti with mutton gravy after a night of jolling hard. They’re open 24/7. 89 Sparks Road, Durban. Call: 031 209 2020. A trip to Durban is not complete without a trip to Johnny's” My love affair with Sunrise Chip 'n' Ranch started when I was a student at Natal University. I am sure this holds true for almost everyone in the province. If you needed a quick snack, you went to the garage, and if you needed a meal that would last you for days, you went to Johnny's. Its undeniably signature dish is surely the Chip 'n' Cheese Roti with (mutton) gravy. This thing is as long as your forearm and as heavy as a bag of potatoes and even the most gluttonous of patrons will regret eating the whole thing in one meal. Notoriously unashamed of its dodgy outward appearance, you may strike it lucky and f...
